Name of Mission Swiss Archaeological Mission at Kerma
Mission No. QSAP 30
Institution University of Neuchâtel
Location Kerma, Northern State
Kerma, which lies near the 3rd Cataract, represents the birthplace of the oldest urban centre in sub-Saharan Africa and saw the rise of the Kingdom of Kush. The main tasks of the mission are to excavate, research, preserve and reconstruct parts of the site and finds. Specifically, these activities include building a wall to protect the Royal Cemetery of Kerma from traffic and nearby cultivation, building a small-scale model of the Neolithic huts of Wadi El Arab, completing the actual model of the ancient town of Kerma, and building replicas of the statues of the Nubian Pharaohs to be exhibited in the National Museum of Sudan.
