Old Dongola was the capital of the ancient Christian Kingdom of Makuria (7th-14th century CE). The site contains many churches, some still with their original mural paintings, houses, palaces and graves. The most important Islamic monument in Sudan is the “Mosque”, originally a Christian coronation hall that was converted into a mosque in 1317 CE. This is in addition to Meroitic and post-Meroitic artefacts, houses and graves from the Islamic Period.
